Sweeteners, a terrible new side effect on the gut discovered

Don't store avocado like this: it's dangerous

A new study highlights how artificial sweeteners, used by diabetics or to artificially sweeten soft drinks and packaged products, are potentially harmful to our intestines, as they cause bacterial infections.

It seems just like the municipalities artificial sweeteners - sucrose, aspartame, sucralose - determine the quality of the 'good' intestinal bacteria: in fact, damaged by these chemicals, they invade the intestinal walls and can lead to even serious pathologies. For the first time, the pathogenic effects of sweeteners on two types of intestinal bacteria are discussed, E. E. coli coli (Escherichia coli) e E. faecalis (Enterococcus faecalis).

Previous studies have already shown that artificial sweeteners can change the number and type of bacteria present in the intestine, but this new research shows that these bacteria can also turn into pathogens as a result of these substances. The new pathogenic bacteria can attach themselves to Caco-2 cells (the epithelial cells that mark the borders of the gut), invade and then kill them.

There is a lot of concern about the effects of consuming chemical sweeteners on our health - he explains Havovi Chichger, author of the research. - Our study is the first to show that some of the most popular synthetic sweeteners in food and drink can transform good gut bacteria into pathogenic bacteria. This change includes the formation of biofilms and an increasing invasion of the intestine by these 'modified' bacteria. This can lead to severe damage to the intestine, with the onset of diseases such as sepsis. Until now, we knew that excessive sugar consumption was an important factor in the development of diseases such as obesity and diabetes. But now it is important to better understand the pros and cons of using natural sugars and synthetic sweeteners in the diet, to better understand the impact of these substances on our health.

According to the researchers, at a concentration of sweeteners equivalent to that contained in two cans of sugar-free soft drinks, all three chemicals transformed E. coli and E. faecalis bacteria into pathogenic bacteria that invaded Caco-2 intestinal cells. , and in different ways resulted in increased biofilm formation.
