Surprise in Kenya! Twin baby elephants are born for the first time in over a decade

Rare occurrence in the Kenyan reserve of Samburu: twin elephants are born. It happens once in every 100 births

It's big party in the Samburu Nature Reserve in the north of Kenya. Two African elephants were born here a few days ago… twins! While it's not that surprising to humans, it happens once in every 100 births in the case of these animals. To give birth to the two puppies, a boy and a girl, the 16-year-old elephant Bora, who already had another child in 2017.

The little ones seem to be in excellent health, but the volunteers of the NGO Save the Elephants, who have been taking care of the pachyderms in the reserve for 28 years, will continue to monitor the elephants in the coming weeks.

Twins are rarely encountered in elephant populations and make up only 1% of births. - explains Iain Douglas-Hamilton, founder of Save the Elephants - Very often mothers do not have enough milk to support two puppies. In fact, the birth of twins has only been recorded once before, in Samburu in 2006. Sadly, both babies died shortly after birth in the Shaba National Reserve. The next few days will be decisive for the new twins, but we all keep our fingers crossed for their survival.

    - African elephants they have the longest gestation period of all mammals. It lasts well 22 months and the elephants give birth every 4 years. Save the Elephants, an NGO committed to protecting these animals on the verge of extinction, will continue to monitor the health of the twins in the coming days. Unfortunately in Kenya and other African countries these gigantic animals are in danger not only due to the fragmentation of the habitat, but also due to the presence of poachers who kill them to resell their ivory tusks.

Fortunately, however, the data of recent years are comforting, at least for Kenya: here the number of elephants has doubled, from 16 in 1989 to 34 in 2018.

We wish the two newborn babies a long life!
