What is magnesium

Magnesium is an essential macro-mineral for our body, similar to a sort of manager that regulates the correct functioning of many physiological mechanisms. It activates over 300 biochemical reactions and is involved in many organic processes, including the protein synthesis, energy metabolism, cell division, the functioning of the nervous and muscular system.

Promotesassimilation of vitamins B, C and E but also of vitamin D, a fundamental element for the health of skeletal tissue. In fact, it is magnesium that allows calcium to be absorbed in the bones, maintaining the level necessary for their functioning.

Daily magnesium requirement

Il daily magnesium requirement varies according to the age and sex of the subject in question. The adult male individuals they should take some between 400 and 420 mg per day, while for women the necessary amount ranges from 310 to 320 mg. For very young women, the daily requirement increases to 360 mg, with peaks reaching 400 mg during pregnancy.

Magnesium in food

Magnesium is contained in many foods, including:

  • Bran
  • Whole grains
  • Legumes
  • Dried Fruit
  • Green leafy vegetables
  • Other vegetables (tomatoes, potatoes and aubergines)
  • Fruits (bananas, strawberries, oranges, cherries, pineapples, grapes, melon)
  • Bitter cocoa
  • Raw sea salt

Magnesium deficiency

Given the abundance and variety of foods that contain this precious mineral, we would be instinctively led to believe that it is impossible to experience a magnesium deficiency. Instead it is a very common condition in modern society due to the frenetic pace and stress we are all subjected to.

Furthermore, it is important to point out that only 30-40% of the magnesium introduced through power comes actually assimilated from our body. Cooking, preservation and refining of food are all mechanisms that determine a process of demineralization of magnesium.

With cooking, for example, about 80% of the magnesium content is lost. For this reason, it would be preferable to consume food in its raw state.

But also the storage and refining of foods cause the loss of part of the magnesium contained in them. Finally, many foods including meat, eggs, fish, cheeses, refined cereals, white sugar, sweets of industrial origin, alcohol and nerve drinks are intrinsically demineralizing substances and therefore remove magnesium from the body.

For these reasons it is often necessary to resort to aadditional intake of this precious mineral, made even more necessary after 40 years of age, when our body is no longer able to assimilate magnesium well through food.

Characteristics of Magnesium Supremo®

Generally speaking, for a magnesium supplement to produce all of its own benefits, it is necessary to consider 2 specific characteristics:

  • elemental magnesium, which measures the amount of actual magnesium contained in the supplement
  • its bioavailability, that is the percentage of magnesium that our body is actually able to assimilate from the intestine, compared to the totality of that taken

The combination of these two factors will determine the real effectiveness of the supplement. There are compounds in which the very high content of elemental magnesium is partially nullified as it is counterbalanced by one poor bioavailability. This is the case with magnesium oxide, for example, where 60% of the molecule is made up of magnesium and only 40% of oxygen.

Although its elemental magnesium content is very high, equal to 60% of the compound, magnesium oxide has a poor bioavailability. This means that only a small percentage of magnesium is absorbed by the intestine. In fact, magnesium oxide is generally known as'magnesia'and used as a laxative.

Its poor absorption by the intestine, combined with the fact that it is not very soluble in water, means that this type of magnesium attracts more water in the intestinal tract, softening the stool and facilitating its expulsion.

In the case of supreme magnesium®, the percentage of elemental magnesium is the result of the ratio between the molecules of citrate and those of magnesium. This percentage is about 16%, therefore much lower than that contained in magnesium oxide for example, but higher than other compounds.

Just think that the level of elemental magnesium content in magnesium lactate is 12%, magnesium pyruvate and sulphate is 10%, while it drops to 8,7% in the case of magnesium pidolate.

Therefore a quantity of elemental magnesium equal to 16%, like that contained in the supreme magnesium®, represents a good percentage.

Furthermore, magnesium citrate, produced from the solution in water of supremo® magnesium powder, is an organic salt, and as such has excellent bioavailability and is easily assimilated by the cells of our body.

In fact, magnesium salts are classified into two macro categories: inorganic and organic. Scientific literature has demonstrated the greater assimilability of organic salts, to which magnesium supremo® (citrate) also belongs, compared to inorganic ones.

But it has not been possible to prove whether the supreme one is the most assimilable of all organic magnesium salts.

How to take Supreme Magnesium®

This supplement is available in the form of dust in a jar of 150 or 300 g or in a pack of 32 sachets.

Just dissolve the powder in a glass of hot water and wait for the solution to become clear. To facilitate its absorption, it is recommended to take magnesium on an empty stomach, in the morning before breakfast and possibly in the evening before dinner.

Supreme Magnesium®, recommended doses

As mentioned, the fneed for magnesium varies according to several factors. Therefore, the recommended supplement dose is also variable. It is generally recommended to take a quantity of powder equal to one teaspoonful, once or twice a day.

One teaspoon, which is equivalent to the dosage of one sachet, contains 2,4 g of powder, which corresponds to 215 mg of magnesium carbonate. We still recommend do not exceed 430 mg per day, or the equivalent of two sachets or 2 teaspoons of powder in the case of a supplement in a jar.

Side Effects of Magnesium Supremo®

Excess magnesium is usually excreted from the body through feces, urine and sweat, so healthy people are at risk of a overdose of this supplement is very limited.

However, although very rare, they can occur side effects due to overdose, as well as hypersensitivity to the product. They are:

- side effects of hypermagnesemia I'm:

  • Arrhythmias
  • Hypotension
  • Drowsiness
  • Dizziness
  • Alterations of neuromuscular transmission

Supreme magnesium®: where to buy it and how much it costs

This supplement is readily available in pharmacies, herbalists and organic stores, even online.

The cost is around 9-10 euros x 100 grams, for which the price of the 150 g jar is around 14-15 euros.

To save money, you can buy the larger 300g version, whose average price is 24-25 euros.

The pack of 32 sachets, on the other hand, costs much more in proportion as it contains already portioned doses of 2,4 grams. The cost is 14-15 euros, roughly the same as the 150-gram jar, but in this case, with the same price you buy only 76,8 grams of powder, i.e. a quantity slightly higher than half of that contained in the jar.

Supreme Magnesium®, overall rating

As mentioned, as regards the assimilability of magnesium by our body, the alleged superiority of this compound compared to other organic magnesium salts has not been demonstrated. In this sense, the supreme adjective to qualify this particular formulation of magnesium is a bit excessive.

Overall, however, it is an excellent product, with remarkable beneficial properties and easily assimilated by our body.

The combination of a good percentage of elemental magnesium and high bioavailability make Magnesium Supremo® a valuable supplement for our health and a very useful ally for our psychophysical well-being.
