Clizia she was a young nymph in love with the god of the sun, every day she followed him with her eyes as she drove the chariot of fire. Apollo flattered by so much love at first he gave in to the girl, but after having seduced her, he abandoned her.

It is even said that he chose his sister. Clizia was desperate to such an extent that he wept for nine full days motionless in a field, while he continued to watch the sun god travel in his chariot.



Legend says that the body of the nymph gradually stiffened, turning into one thin stem but tough, her feet stuck in the earth, while her hair turned yellow. Clizia had become a sunflower who continues to follow his love.
