Sun creams, which are the best and worst brands. Garnier Ambre Solaire and Piz Buin "insufficient"

Öko-Test compared and analyzed 22 sun creams to identify controversial substances within them and recommend the best ones

Don't store avocado like this: it's dangerous

Summer is coming and we will be more exposed to the sun, which is why we need to equip ourselves with a protective cream that suits our needs. To help us choose a product that is effective but at the same time free from controversial ingredients, it has arrived now a new test that compared 22 sun creams.

Sunbathing is good but we must do it with caution, always using a sunscreen suitable for our phototype. Since these are products to spread on the skin and keep for a long time, it is important to choose effective and safe options, free of potentially dangerous substances.

To understand which are the best products on the market, Öko-Test magazine decided to compare 22 sun creams with SPF 30, purchased in supermarkets, pharmacies and natural and organic products stores.

The results

As is almost always the case in these tests, laboratory analyzes have identified some substances that it would be better not to use on our skin.

In particular, these are:

  • octocrylene, a UV filter that can form a substance believed to be carcinogenic (benzophenone) and is considered an endocrine disruptor.
  • ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate, another UV filter that can interfere with the hormonal system
  • PEG compounds, which can make the skin more permeable to foreign substances, and are often used in cosmetics as emulsifiers.
  • organohalogen compounds: many are considered allergenic and all accumulate in the environment. Among other things, it is not clear where they come from, writes the magazine, since they are not indicated in the compositions of sunscreens.
  • plastic compounds: which have been found in 8 sunscreens

Just as the Environmental Working Group (EWG) concluded, even according to German experts, we should prefer sunscreens with mineral filters such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, the latter carcinogenic only if inhaled (therefore categorically avoid sprays). As the magazine reads: “they are still the best choice over chemical filters”.
