Don't store avocado like this: it's dangerous

Sun creams, even if used on the skin, in just 24 hours the substances contained in them end up in the blood, with effects that are not always healthy. These are avobenzone, oxybenzone, ecamsule and octocrylene. To say it is a new study by the United States Food and Drug Administration.

The investigations of the FDA on sunscreens and their health effects. Just recently, with the publication of the new guidelines it had warned about the presence dthe potentially dangerous ingredients in the creams we use, 14 out of 16 in common use.

Now, the new study found that the blood concentration of 4 ingredients it continued to increase as daily use persisted. Furthermore, these substances remained in the body for at least 24 hours after use.

That's right. Just one day of use is enough for several common ingredients in sunscreen products to enter the bloodstream at levels so high that an FDA safety investigation is launched.

They are part of a list of ingredients already placed under the magnifying glass by the American authorities, on which other investigations are underway.

However, the new pilot study evaluated the systemic absorption, i.e. through the skin and the body, of four active ingredients commonly found in sun creams, applied under conditions of maximum use:

    • avobenzone,
    • oxybenzone,
    • ecamsule
    • octocrylene.

The study involved 24 healthy volunteers who were randomly assigned a spray sunscreen or lotion that contained one of four ingredients. Volunteers were asked to put the assigned sunscreen on 75% of the body 4 times a day for 4 days. 30 blood samples were taken from each volunteer for one week.

Of the six people who applied the ecamsule cream, 5 had blood levels considered statistically significant at the end of the first day. For the other three chemicals, most notably oxybenzone, all volunteers showed significant levels after the first day. Among other things, oxybenzone is an enemy of marine animals and in particular of corals, for this reason Hawaii banned it.

Since sunscreens are formulated to work on the surface of the skin, there are those who argue that they are not absorbed in appreciable quantities but the new pilot study has tried to really find out. And the results confirmed the suspicions; all four active ingredients tested were absorbed deeply and were detected in the blood for up to 24 hours after use.

Skin cancer incidence rates continue to rise, making the risk of excess sun exposure a major public health priority Yet despite what we know about prevention, skin cancer remains the most commonly diagnosed in the United States. " explains the FDA. "As sunscreens are now used more frequently, in greater quantities and by larger populations, it is more important than ever to make sure they are safe and effective for daily use and throughout life."

The fact that an ingredient is absorbed through the skin and into the body does not mean that it is safe.

Scott Faber, Senior Vice President of Government Affairs of the Environmental Working Group, said:

“It is not new that what we put on the skin is absorbed by the body. This study is the FDA's way of showing sunscreen manufacturers that they need to do research to see if absorbing the chemicals poses a health risk. "

The study was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
