Sun creams: can you use last year's?

Sun creams: can you use last year's?

Using a sunscreen is very important if we want to protect our skin, starting with Spring. However, it may happen that there are some solar products from the previous year left, perhaps used very little or even still closed. Is it really necessary to throw them away or can they still be used?

Don't store avocado like this: it's dangerous

Those who recently found themselves in the hands of the "old" sun creams of the previous summer probably asked themselves a question: will they still work or should they be categorically thrown away? A doubt that comes even more if we have to use sunscreen on children.

Generally it is believed it is correct to throw them and also on the packaging as a precaution the manufacturers write that the sunscreen should be used within 12 months of opening the bottle. But a test conducted by Altroconsumo a few years ago actually highlighted a somewhat different situation.

The analysis went to test 3 sun creams that had been open for a year already to find out if it was still safe to use them. In particular, it was assessed whether their degree of protection from harmful solar rays had remained unchanged even after the maximum time reported for use had been exceeded.

It was thus seen that, at least the 3 products analyzed (all dedicated to the protection of children), even if exposed to high temperatures and not exactly perfect conservation, had the same effectiveness after a year had elapsed.

When open sunscreen no longer works

However, this may not be true in all cases, so if you intend to reuse your solar open from the previous season, first check its texture, appearance and smell.

For example, if the ingredients have separated or the sun smells bad, common sense dictates to throw it away.

However, we always advise you to check the effectiveness of the cream using a small sample of the product and to pay particular attention the first time you use it, for example avoiding exposure during the hottest hours.
