Summer solstice. Today the arrival of summer is celebrated all over the world, with great events, gatherings and various kinds of initiatives: love for science or for myth?

June 21, the day when we bid farewell to spring, has always been the longest day of the year, with around 16 hours of daylight for the northern hemisphere. This year in the Northern Hemisphere the solstice fell at 23:09 pm last night.

For this reason, already in the early hours of dawn, thousands of people in different parts of the world have warmly welcomed the first day of summer.

A Stonehenge, for example, a mythical location par excellence, numerous spectators witnessed the sunrise, while in New York, for the tenth consecutive year, 14.000 sportsmen welcomed the summer solstice doing yoga exercises in Times Square, defined as the ideal place to get rid of mental worries and rediscover harmony. Over time, Kokino, in northern Macedonia, has become - like many other sites around the world - a special observation place for thousands of people who want to witness the first summer sun rise.

But why is this event so important?

In the past, the summer and winter solstices were one way to follow the seasons and, consequently, to modify agricultural practices by favoring the climate.

In astronomy, however, the solstice is the time when the Sun reaches the point of maximum or minimum declination, situation linked to the inclination of the earth's rotation axis.

In short, we do not yet know if the solstice is celebrated to celebrate science, the natural course of things or myth, it is certain that summer has officially begun!
