Le sugary drinks of any kind that are carbonated, fruit juices or other are certainly not allies of our health. Now a new study links these sodas to increased risk of getting type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke. And too high doses would not be needed either, according to experts two a week is already too many!

It has been found by several researches that high sugar levels not only contribute to the risk of being overweight and obese but also increase the chances of developing type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome, a series of conditions that increase the risk of heart disease.

The new study in this regard was conducted by a team led by Faadiel Essop, of the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa, who carried out a review of 36 epidemiological studies carried out in the previous 10 years. The results obtained from the survey were published in the Journal of the Endocrine Society.

Experts have found further evidence of the link between consuming sugary drinks and increases in parameters such as blood pressure, triglycerides, blood sugar, abdominal fat, and more. All risk factors for the onset of cardiovascular problems as well as for type 2 diabetes.

The situation is especially worrying as the consumption of these drinks is frequent in young and old and is constantly growing all over the world. The problem also concerns fruit juices as, as Essop pointed out, one thing is to eat an apple and another is to drink the juice:

“When you eat an apple, in addition to sugar, there is a lot of fiber and satiety is achieved better. But when you drink a glass of apple juice you are getting three or four apple sugar and no fiber. This is a much more concentrated dose of sugar which will affect blood levels "

It is unclear exactly how these drinks increase the likelihood of metabolic syndrome but what we have seen is the result: two or more sugary drinks per week can increase waist circumference, weight, blood pressure, inflammation within the body and reduce good cholesterol.

Then there is the question of insulin sensitivity: the study found that individuals who consume sugary drinks for 10 weeks show a 17% decrease in insulin sensitivity.

Professor Essop concluded that, if you visit the results, there is a clear need to educate the population about the harmful effects of excess consumption of sugary drinks.
