We have already given you 10 excellent reasons to avoid drinking fizzy drinks, full of sugar and now recognized by everyone as harmful to health. Today we add one more: according to new research these drinks they can accelerate the aging process just like smoking does.

The research team at the University of California at San Francisco, which saw their research published in the American Journal of Public Health, pointed the finger at sugary drinks arguing that the harm they cause is not limited to simple weight gain with risk of obesity but, even more serious, their consumption affects the processes of aging of our cells accelerating them and thus exposing us more to the harmful action of free radicals.

To arrive at this the researchers have analyzed DNA samples of over 5 thousand people between 20 and 65 years. What immediately leapt to the eye was that those who drank about 2 cans of fizzy drinks per day showed variations in DNA that corresponded to a cell aging of 4,6 years. On the other hand, a single drink a day was equivalent to an aging of almost 2 years.

In particular, what we wanted to see in the laboratory was the situation of the telomeres, the final part of the chromosomes that acts as a protection. Self shorter than normal, these can expose the DNA to possible damage. The researchers therefore intended to evaluate whether those who regularly drink carbonated soft drinks undergo the shortening of telomeres and the answer was obviously affirmative: those who consume these drinks have telomeres much shorter than normal.

We already knew this but it is always better to reiterate: leave these drinks on the supermarket shelves!
