Two twins, two doctors who have put on a few extra pounds and decide to do an unusual experiment to find out more about effects that nutrition has on the body and health. This is the story of Chris e Alexander Van Tulleken, which for a whole month they decided to eat, respectively, without sugars (carbohydrates) and without grassi to see the effect on the body of whether or not these macronutrients are taken.

Despite being doctors, the 35-year-old twins admit a bit of ignorance on the subject of 'healthy eating': "Even though we are doctors - I also have a degree in public health - none of us knew much about how to lose weight and eat healthy. . These topics are among the cracks of the medical school, ”said Alexander.

For years it was thought that everyone the fats they hurt and led to overweight then it was the turn of the carbohydrates, often considered in some diets as "absolute evil" (see the great success of high-protein diets). The twins wanted to see clearly and really understand what happens in the body when too many of these foods are consumed.

The experiment is particularly interesting because the genetic makeup of the twins is identical and therefore you can see in practice the effect that certain foods can do under the same conditions within an organism. The observed changes, in fact, since they could not be attributed to genetics, had to be necessarily due to dietary variations.

Alexander followed a carbohydrate-free diet for one month e Chris on the other hand followed an extremely low-fat diet. They could eat as much as they wanted and they both got equal exercise.

Both diets were, of course, unbalanced and the problems did not take long to make themselves felt. The twin who ate without carbohydrates, had also eliminated fruit and vegetables and therefore became constipated. He was never hungry but he felt slow and tired, he even struggled to breathe. The other, who instead had excluded fats, never felt full, had to always have snacks and no longer enjoyed the pleasure of food, not being able to use even a drop of olive oil!

They had both lost weight but their health suffered. The conclusions? “We must not demonize a single nutrient - said Chris -“ It is too easy to demonize fat or sugar but there is the possibility to get out of trouble in other ways. The enemy is right in front of us in the form of processed foods ”. If you want to lose weight, therefore, you must not fall into the error of avoiding food categories but it will be much easier to choose to do without processed foods based on sugars and fats that affect the brain in a completely different way than natural foods.
