Sub-zero sleep for the children of Northern Europe: does the cold make you sick or not?

The singular habit in some Northern countries of letting children sleep outside for a while for the benefits that derive from it

Don't store avocado like this: it's dangerous

Nanna sotto zero, or rather why let your children sleep outdoors exposed to frost. Maybe someone could turn up their noses. I understand that the cold does not hurt the children and that keep them in the open air you only benefit their immune systems, but the habit they have in Finland a little bewilderment in someone might leave it. If only the puppets come casually left to take their nap outside, even with very low temperatures, for an authentic "nanna sotto zero".

A habit that is illogical? No, far from it. In fact, it rests on a solid scientific foundation.

The story is this: if you crack from the cold outside, there is no better temperature to let the little ones sleep (for a while) on the veranda or in the garden, in their comfortable pram. In the Nordic countries, not only in Finland, it's a widespread practice, so much so that parents even equip themselves with an analog baby monitor (itkuhälytin in Finnish) to take a look at the little boy out there.

It is not a completely wicked custom, in hindsight, if you consider that the practice dates back to the 20s, when the pediatrician Value Ylppö helped reduce the high mortality rates in Finland recommending to mothers just to let their children sleep outside, even with temperatures between -10 ° and -15 °. The low temperature and sunlight would have warded off rickets, improved blood circulation, and increased immunity to bacteria.

All this is reflected in a study by the University of Oulu, according to which children would sleep better in the open air and the nap would be three times longer than that between the four walls domestic. In addition, the ideal outside temperature would be -5 ° C.

The only recommendation is that of make sure the baby is well covered, is protected from wind, rain and insect bites and has woolen clothes when the temperature drops below freezing. The "sub zero sleep" is also used in Swedish kindergartens and nursery schools, a way, in short, to instill the conviction that the cold must not be an impediment to going out and various activities, especially in countries where the hours of sunshine are you really count.

What do you think of it? Probably if we left the baby out in the restaurant while we eat a pizza, we would get a complaint for neglect of minors. But it would also do us good to understand that close them indoors when it's cold (and ours, with the exception of some places, are not even so cold) and especially when the sun is shining outside it would be a pity!
