A stray dog in China had a swollen head twice the normal size due to a very tight collar. Volunteers saved him
He is about to end up run over, his mother saves himDatou is a stray dog that had such a tight collar that its head swelled to twice its normal size. Fortunately, the animal was rescued by volunteers from an animal shelter.
An unusual stray dog, with a visibly swollen and deformed head, roamed the streets of Baitang, Fujian province in southeast China. Residents believed he was injured and promptly notified the Putian City Animal Protection Association that they took care of the dog.
It was thus discovered that the very tight collar that he had tied around his neck was causing the malformation and that by now had entered his skin, growing with him.
Since that time Datou (which means "Big Head"), as the volunteers of the animal shelter called him, has made an incredible transformation.
The footage shared with the Douyin account of the animal shelter, shows the dog resting, straining to keep his eyes open and raising his head with difficulty due to the extreme swelling.
A volunteer gently holds the dog's head and removes the rope-like collar in hopes of relieving the pain. Fortunately, everything went well and, just a day after Datou was released from the constriction around his neck, everything improved, even if the healing process was slow.

Huang Qian, director of the Putian City Animal Protection Association, told the Daily Star:
“We believe Datou became a stray at a young age, but we're not sure if he was abandoned or disappeared from his owner's home. The collar was fastened at the tightest point and got stuck in the same crevice as it grew before slowly wedging into the neck "
Qian also said his condition worried rescuers:
“The vets also found a blood clot in Datou's brain. They gave him anti-inflammatory injections to reduce pain and discomfort before letting the swelling heal on its own, ”she added.
Miraculously, two weeks later, Datou showed his first sign of progress. The swelling has gone down and her head appears to have shrunk to a normal size.

Datou's story has been widely shared on Chinese social media and now the volunteers are hoping to find a new welcoming home for him. More than 100 applications have already arrived, they said from the shelter, but the successful candidate will have to reside mandatorily in the city of Putian so that volunteers can visit and check Datou regularly.
This story is very reminiscent of that of Palla, found in 2016 in Terralba, Sardinia. This little dog had a nylon string tied around her neck, probably from when she was a puppy, a sort of collar that she had grown into and that had created a disproportionate deformation and bulge of the head. Even in that case the story had a happy ending thanks to the care of the Duemari veterinary clinic in Oristano.
