Stop the dog and cat meat trade in Indonesia. There could be a turning point after years of battles, petitions and protests. The Indonesian government seems willing to put an end to this practice which puts public health at risk.

The turning point is the result of the meeting on the National Coordination of Animal Welfare held in Jakarta in recent days which also included the discussion on the trade in dog and cat meat (passed off as chicken to tourists).

Behind the decision of the Indonesian government there is no animal rights motivation, but if the result is to stop the trade, in the end it doesn't matter. Indonesia has lost credibility and there are many who find such a low standard of animal welfare unacceptable.

The tourism industry took a hit when it was discovered that tourists were being given dog meat passed off as chicken and images of the Tomohon market in early 2018 showing the conditions in which these animals were forced to live. resulted in general indignation.

Beaten, tortured and enclosed in small bamboo cages. Every year in Bali, 70 dogs are slaughtered and served to tourists in restaurants. According to Animals Australia, the number of dogs killed in Bali is seven times that of the Yulin Dog Eating Festival in China.

A few days ago the Dog Meat Free Indonesia (DMFI) issued a communication explaining that tourists were exposed to anger due to the illegal trade in dog and cat meat. 93% of people living in Indonesia disagree with their consumption, yet it continues to be seen on the street.

There is also a question of public health (as well as fraud) at stake here because the animals killed are strays who may have contracted rabies. For some time now, trade has also been boycotted through global petitions.

“Eating dog meat is not illegal in Bali, but killing animals with cruelty or contaminating the meat with poison is against the law,” explains Lyn White, Animals Australia's campaign director.

Dog meat is sold not only in restaurants, but also on the street, but if tourists ask what it is, they are told that it is chicken. For now, the government has only expressed its intention, we hope that soon everything will become a reality.
