The government of Nagaland, a state of northeastern India, announced the ban on the sale and consumption of dog meat but also on the import of these animals from abroad.

The decision of prohibit the import and trade of dogs as well as the sale of their meat, both cooked and raw, was taken during a meeting of the state cabinet, Nagaland Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Neiba Kronu said.

The government spokesman said that the choice was made considering the dangers of importing dogs from other states but also bearing in mind what is written in the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, a law of the Indian parliament enacted in 1960 to avoid pain and animal suffering.

To announce the news concerning dogs was also the Secretary of State Temjen Toy in a tweet.

The State Government has decided to ban commercial import and trading of dogs and dog markets and also the sale of dog meat, both cooked and uncooked. Appreciate the wise decision taken by the State’s Cabinet @Manekagandhibjp @Neiphiu_Rio

The state government's decision is considered historic by animal protection groups that have been fighting for years to stop cruelty to dogs.

After chilling photos circulated on social networks concerning the terrible treatments reserved for dogs, a petition was born to ask for an end to these tortures while the Federation of Indian Animal Protection Organizations (FIAPO) had invited Prime Minister Neiphiu Rio to immediately take action on the matter.

“We are writing with deep concern, shock and horror at the recent images that have emerged from the animal bazaar markets in Dimapur, where dogs are seen in terrible conditions, tied in bags waiting in a wet market, for their illegal slaughter, trade. and consumption like meat, ”wrote animal rights activists.

In its letter, the federation stated that while the controversial Dog Meat Festival in Yulin in China ended on June 20 amid widespread global condemnation, "here at home we continue to use dogs for meat."

The Yulin Festival does not stop: ten thousand dogs and cats slaughtered in ten days

We recall among other things that, just a few days before the start of the Yulin Festival, dogs and cats had been eliminated from the list of edible animals but this, and not even the pandemic in progress, managed to stop the "celebrations".

In China, dogs and cats have been officially eliminated from the list of edible animals a few days before the Yulin Festival

The dog meat trade in Nagaland is illegal and in full violation of various laws, including Section 429 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) which makes the killing of animals a crime punishable by up to five years in prison.

The consumption of dog meat is banned in India under the Food Safety and Standards (Food and Additive Standards) Regulation of 2011. However, this is little enforced, and in the states of Nagaland, Mizoram, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh, thousands of dogs are illegally captured every year from the streets or stolen from homes and transported in jute sacks before being brutally beaten and finally slaughtered for meat.

Now the Indian state has finally taken a stand and a historic decision is being celebrated which, according to the forecasts of the NGO Humane Society International (HSI / India), will make it possible to save about 30 dogs a year.

Maneka Sanjay Gandhi, an Indian environmental politician and animal rights activist, also showed all her satisfaction in a thank you tweet in which she remembers that compassion is the soul of her nation.
