There is really no limit to imagination and creative recycling. A group of volunteers in Portugal has created an installation that is truly out of the ordinary. From the baskets of 133 old washing machines, steampunk street lamps were born.

It took the volunteers about six months to collect the necessary material. Everything had to be ready for the festival of the city of Camara de Lobos, on the island of Madeira.
Many washing machine baskets were recovered from the garbage on the streets, others were donated by those who had an old washing machine in the house. The initial goal was to collect 100 baskets but in the end they found more. In fact, once the set number was reached, donations began to arrive.
The idea was born from the cultural association Teatro Metaphora which brings together the artists of the city and which aims to promote ecological well-being and the responsible use of raw materials as well as the dissemination of art.
The idea created in Portugal reminds us of the Rewashlamp project, with its lamps created by creative recycling of old washing machine baskets.

Volunteers didn't just collect i baskets of old washing machines but they also prepared them for installation and mounted them on the light poles. The streets of the city in this way lit up with many different colors and created an unexpected spectacle that was much appreciated by both tourists and citizens. We who cannot reach Portugal at the moment, can admire these original street lamps at least in photos.
