Grow fruit e vegetables in really tight spaces does it seem like a mission impossible? Maybe soon it won't be anymore. The students of the MIT are working on a new invention to improve the possibilities of indoo gardeningr thanks to new technologies.

Growing the vegetable garden within the walls of the house will be easier thanks to one smartphone and to the system of microfarming named Sproutsio. It is a high-tech above-ground cultivation system that makes use of special sensors capable of indicating the nutritional needs of the plants.

The sensors are connected to aApp to be consulted directly from your smartphone. The units for the cultivation of a miniature vegetable garden have a very minimal look and are equipped with lighting devices and even cameras, which allow you to control the vegetable garden from a distance, even when you are away from home.

The invention was born from an idea of Jenny Broutin Farah, MIT student. The project, linked to the vegetable garden from the beginning, immediately turned towards the cultivation in small urban spaces. It will be particularly suitable for aromatic herbs, small fruits and small vegetables, such as cherry tomatoes and chillies, in order to have them at hand in the kitchen without effort and without having large spaces available.

SproutsIO is an ad system high efficiency and uses 98% less water and 60% less fertilizer compared to conventional methods. It allows to obtain a harvest whose quantity will be 6 times as much compared to that grown in jars of the same size with common techniques.

The different units can be positioned in various parts of the house, in order to make the most of any suitable space available. The invention was also designed for the restaurants, which will thus be able to offer dishes prepared with truly local ingredients. SproutsIO is now in a beta test phase e will be available for sale in about a year. It will be officially unveiled at MIT's 2014 Student Showcase in September.
