An incredible shot of a marine scientist portrays a yellow sponge and a pink starfish, very similar to the famous couple protagonist of the cartoon set in the ocean.

Marine scientist Christopher Mah, a researcher at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, has found an unprecedented pair consisting of a yellow sea sponge and a pink starfish found deep in the Atlantic Ocean, about 200 miles east of New York. It is impossible not to notice the similarity with the sponge SpongeBob SquarePants and his companion in adventures Patrick, protagonists of the well-known cartoon produced by Nickelodeon.

I don't usually make these references, but… WOW. Living SpongeBob and Patrick - wrote the scientist in commentary on the photo posted on Twitter. - It's a nice comparison, because for once there is the superimposition of the two living beings and also of the colors.

In the world there are more than 8.500 species of sea sponges - these are creatures that have lived in the oceans for almost 600 million years: their shape and their consistency varies greatly depending on the place where they live (sand, rocky surfaces, depths ...), and there are very few species that resemble the cartoon character. The species immortalized in the shot belongs to the genus Hertwigia, even if such a bright color is unusual in deep sea: usually, at those depths, the sponges are orange or white due to the lack of sunlight.

Chondraster grandis is instead the name of the species to which the starfish belongs, with five arms covered with small suckers that allow it to attach itself to rocks and other organisms. In this case, the color is not usual: these stars are usually pink (but they can also be white). Despite their harmless appearance, starfish are carnivorous and eat sea sponges.

So, in real life, Patrick and SpongeBob can't be friends!

    • Starfish, the increasingly frequent heat waves could make them disappear forever
    • In marine sponges a substance that can stop cancer and kill herpes. And their cultivation reduces water pollution
