Sponge Cat: The children's story that incites violence against animals ends up in textbooks and infuriates Chile

A story that is incredible, made of pure sadism, was among the desks of the Chilean elementary schools. But an Animal Rights Foundation has made its voice heard

Don't store avocado like this: it's dangerous

An "obvious content of animal abuse and irresponsible possession", so a book intended for second grade children did not like (rightly) the animal rights associations, which thus manage to get it eliminated from schools.

It happens in Chile, where "The best child in the world and his sponge cat" (original title: "El niño más bueno del mundo y su gato estropajo") has caused a sensation in recent months, a story by the writer for children Chilean Mauricio Paredes included in a program book intended for secondary school children.

At the center of the story is a little boy, Ignacio, who tries to become, in fact, "the best and kindest of all", but to do so he uses an unfortunate kitten in the true sense of the word.

As an organization we express concern and complete rejection of the content of the story, since the facts are displayed where an animal is exploited and mistreated, in a positive tone and without moral questions, which makes us happy with the normalization of this type of behavior that threatens freedom and interests. who have other animals, write from the Fundaciòn Apla which first launched thealarm on this obviously harmful text and proposed to the Chilean Ministry of Education (MINEDUC) to eliminate it.

    What the text says

For a start, I'm going to be the best child on the planet. I want to wash my father's car, but I have neither water nor sponge. Luckily, a kitten just arrived at my house! Since it was all wet, I had the great idea of using it. So I'll be nice to animals too. It will be dry and the car, flawless. I'll call you: Sponge! It seems that he too wants to help me to be kind, because with his nails he made many artistic streaks on the varnish "[...]

The only bad thing is that Sponge didn't stay completely dry, but… I have the solution! I don't know how to drive, but I know how to start the car. With the heater on full power I can dry it, although it seems my cat artist prefers to continue expressing his creativity, because he is scratching all the seats as he jumps into the car. The bad thing now is that with the pee he is doing the seats are very smelly so I opened all the windows.

The cat then escapes from the car and takes refuge under the vehicle and the child:

Fortunately, the horn sounds very loud. And Sponge is finally out, he walks very stunned.

    And then:

I put Sponge as a stopper in the exhaust pipe, but I couldn't turn off the car. So the engine exploded and the car roof fell off and flew off. My father will be very happy! his old vehicle has been transformed into a modern car with a sunroof. All perfect now, I have to find out where the scratcher was shot.

Fundaciòn Apla sent an official letter to the Ministry of Education asking for the story to be deleted. Mineduc has agreed to eliminate it starting from the 2023 school year.

Empathy and respect for non-human animals from the beginning of schooling, as sanctioned by the draft of the New Constitution, conclude by the Foundation.
