Plastic bags, ropes, fishing nets and other waste. We are not listing the contents of a garbage can but it is what was found inside the stomach of a sperm whale, found dead off the southeast coast of Spain.

The young male was killed by ingesting an enormous amount of waste. About 30 pounds of garbage were found inside his digestive system.

Il sperm whale 10 meters long, it was discovered near the small town of Cabo de Palos, in the south-eastern region of Murcia, in February, according to the regional government.

The officials of the El Valle Wildlife Rescue Center, after conducting an autopsy on the animal, they ascertained that it had died from its inability to digest or remove the garbage, due to peritonitis.

The tragic death of the sperm whale prompted the Murcia regional government, together with the European Environmental Association and the European Regional Development Fund, to launch a campaign against ocean litter.

Consuelo Rosauro, director general of the regional government for the natural environment, he said that the presence of plastic in the seas and oceans is one of the greatest threats to wildlife conservation in the world.

“Many animals are trapped in the garbage or ingest large quantities of plastic which end up causing its death. And the Murcia region is no stranger to this problem. We must face it through cleaning actions and, above all, with the awareness of citizens ”.

The awareness campaign includes beach cleaning activities, using the 'Ocean Conservancy' protocol, which allows to obtain data on the type and quantity of marine litter.

It is estimated that around 8 million tons of plastic waste ends up in oceans around the world every year. In 2017, researchers predicted that the annual figure will double by 2025 if swift action is not taken to tackle this form of pollution.
