South Tyrol supports village shops: incentives of up to 15000 euros to protect old and new businesses

In South Tyrol, new incentives to protect village shops at risk of closure and encourage the opening of new commercial activities.

Don't store avocado like this: it's dangerous

In South Tyrol, especially in the peripheral areas, the survival of small village shops is at risk. For this reason, the Provincial Government of Bolzano has approved the criteria for the contributions relating to the two-year period 2020-2021 aimed at the protection of these activities.

The goal is to encourage trade within the villages, both by protecting the existing shops and by encouraging the opening of new businesses. Neighborhood trade is an advantage not only for local traders, but also for residents, who are not forced to travel long distances to have access to the products needed in everyday life.

Encourage the opening of new businesses

According to the provision, the Economy Department can assign contributions of up to 15.000 euros for the opening of neighborhood businesses in localities that do not have them. By "neighborhood businesses" we mean shops that work in villages with at least 150 inhabitants and that sell basic foodstuffs at the retail level.

Protect commercial businesses

To ensure the survival of the village shops already present in the area, the Province provides incentives ranging from 9000 to 11.000 euros. Activities eligible for this contribution must perform one of the following services: sale of local products, home delivery, sale of newspapers or postal service.

In addition, the requirements include:

  • average annual turnover declared for VAT purposes, in the last three years, not exceeding 400.000 euros;
  • maximum three full-time employees not considering among these the spouse and relatives of the holder within the second degree in a straight line;
  • sales area up to 150 m²;
  • daily opening hours of more than three hours for six days a week.

How to apply

Applications to request contributions must be made online at the Office of Commerce and Services of the Province by April 30, 2020 (for protection) or by August 31, 2020 (in case you want to open a new business). The details are available on the portal of the Province in the section of extraordinary interventions in favor of neighborhood services.
