South Tyrol also wants to kill the Bear M49, Minister Costa's appeal to save Papillon

South Tyrol also wants to kill the Bear M49, Minister Costa's appeal to save Papillon

Papillon has arrived in the Bolzano area: Minister Costa asks not to kill the bear but the President of the province is ready to kill the animal

He is about to end up run over, his mother saves him

More than a month after escaping from the cage in which he was locked up at the Casteller, the bear M49 was renamed Papillon continues to wander through the woods leaving traces of its passage.

In the last 48 hours the brown bear it moved from the province of Trento to that of Bolzano: it is not easy to locate the animal exactly as it has no radio collar, but footprints and hair have been found, as well as the carcass of a calf as evidence of its passage. The bear would also have been sighted by a hiker and two shepherds.

Following the sighting, the Minister of the Environment Sergio Costa has launched an appeal to the autonomous province of Bolzano:

“I read that Papillon, that is the bear M49, would have definitively moved away from the province of Trento where there is a capture and killing order on him and he would be heading to that of Bolzano.
This is good news, however, if the Autonomous Province of Bolzano does not put his life at risk. First of all, then we must be sure that the bear they are talking about is him.
Now I urge the province of Bolzano not to create counterproductive alarmism.
In a healthy, cordial and institutional relationship, I expect to soon receive news from President Arno Kompatscher to activate Ispra, which is and will always be ready to support the territory with all its competence and availability.
I therefore urge you not to issue ordinances that endanger Papillon's life.
Let's let the technicians speak and not the suggestions. I renew my appeal: do not kill him ”- these are the words of the Minister.

However, the South Tyrolean Hunting and Fishing Office has ordered an order signed by Kompatscher, which follows the one issued a month ago by Trentino: Papillon must be captured and the killing of the animal is foreseen should it come close to homes or be dangerous for humans.

We hope that Papillon's escape can end in the best possible way, perhaps accepting the invitation of Leonardo Lippa, mayor of the Abruzzo municipality of Villavallelonga who offered hospitality to the bear in the Abruzzo woods.
