South Africa bans the breeding of lions for hunting (but that's not enough)

In South Africa it will be prohibited by law to breed lions, but hunters will be able to continue to legally kill them in the wild.

The South African government will ban lion farms for hunting. This was announced yesterday by the Minister of the Environment Barbara Creecy during a press conference in which the conservation of fauna was discussed. Soon in the country it will therefore be forbidden to keep lions in captivity. Too bad, however, that the hunting of this species will not be prohibited. Indeed, a "more authentic" hunting experience will be promoted: lions can be hunted only in the wild.

"The panel of scientific experts found that the captive lion industry poses risks to the sustainability of wild lion conservation" - said Minister Barbara Creecy - "The committee recommends that South Africa do not breed lions in captivity, do not keep lions in captivity or use lions in captivity or market their derivatives. I asked the department to act accordingly and to ensure that the necessary consultation is conducted in the implementation ”.

A severe blow to the farm lobbies, but it is not enough

In a nearly 600-page document, experts appointed by South Africa's Ministry of Environment recommended that the government end the breeding and keeping of captive lions for economic purposes, including close encounters with cubs. Furthermore, the group suggested an immediate moratorium on the trade in bone of this species.

A decision that represents a great blow to the lion breeding lobbies, but which unfortunately does not provide for a ban on the hunting of lions in the country.

"We must stop and abolish the domestication of lions through breeding" - underlined Minister Creecy - We do not want captive breeding, hunting in captivity, selling puppies as pets. The legal and regulated hunting of iconic species, according to precise environmental rules, will continue to be permitted ".

In South Africa, there are hundreds of facilities where lions and other big cats are raised in cramped enclosures and cages, in terrifying conditions. The cubs are separated from their mothers a few days after birth and the females are forced into exhausting reproductive rhythms.

The decision taken by the government therefore represents an important step forward for the protection of lions, but unfortunately it will not be enough, as hunters will be able to continue to hunt them freely and legally in their natural habitat.
