Solid shampoo vs bar of soap

Goodbye plastic bottles because solid shampoo bans packaging and lasts longer than liquid one, so in one go it allows you to save money and not harm the planet.

With about 250 grams of solid shampoo it is possible to wash your hair 80 times and even if its appearance may seem that of an ordinary bar of soap, in reality the two products are not at all similar.

While the common soap is prepared with fats and caustic soda dissolved in water with a basic pH and therefore not very suitable for washing the hair, the solid shampoo instead is prepared with solid surfactants obtained from coconut oil which give it a less basic pH and therefore suitable for hair cleansing. Water, oils and nourishing vegetable butter and essential oils are added to the solid surfactants.

Solid shampoo: washing power

The first question that arises is: will the hair be just as clean? Meanwhile, let's say that the solid shampoo contains very natural ingredients and nourishing oils that do not damage our hair or scalp.

The washing power is the same even if at first the step may not fully satisfy you, but this is due to the fact that if you used a traditional product before (therefore with parabens, dyes, silicones), your hair needs time to regain balance.

Do not worry, therefore, if the first wash your hair could be dry or stringy, the situation improves with time and your hair will be more shiny than ever.

Solid shampoo: how to use it?

Solid shampoo should not be rubbed directly on the head, just to avoid that stringy effect we were talking about. For example, you can rub it in your hands with a little water or fill a basin with warm water, then immerse the soap and hair, so as to make them wet and lather at the same time. After rinsing them, there are those who opt to make a last step using vinegar or lemon (to rinse) or a common conditioner to avoid knots.

Solid shampoo: how to store it?

As we said, no useless packaging, the only precaution to prevent it from deteriorating is to let it dry on a ventilated surface and then store it in a recyclable container, such as a simple soap dish.

Avoid exposing it to light or heat sources, in order to preserve the power of its ingredients.

Today on the market there are many companies that produce solid shampoo, just choose the one that suits us best.

Solid shampoo: where to buy it and how to choose it

You can find solid shampoo both in shops specialized in organic and natural products, herbalist's shops, shops that offer cosmetic products prepared in a natural way, but they are starting to be found in normal supermarkets, such as Lidl, from Natura yes, or you can try them comfortably online. There are now many brands that produce it and you are spoiled for choice. Small, comfortable, practical and inexpensive: what more could you want?

The only recommendation is to read the label that contains its INCI. The solid shampoo then must be a natural product and not tested on animals.

Avoid harmful ingredients, such as sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS).

Solid shampoo: Aleppo soap

Some also use Aleppo soap as a hair shampoo, as it has the ability to prevent hair loss and act as an anti-dandruff. However, it is important to be careful to rinse the hair afterwards with a solution of water and vinegar, in order to bring the pH back to optimal levels. This soap has antioxidant properties. It does not contain aggressive surfactants and its particular natural scent has a real relaxing effect on our senses.

Solid shampoo: Marseille soap

Marseille soap: a simple and miraculous ally for cleaning the house and the person. The best and original is made from three, simple, natural ingredients: olive oil, water and caustic soda. It can also be used as a shampoo, toothpaste or shaving cream. It is a natural antiseptic (prevents the onset of infections caused by germs), a repellent against parasites, it is perfect for skin and sensitive areas.

One part of castile soap can be left to dissolve in three parts of boiling water, after having carefully grated it. In this way you will obtain a liquid shampoo to be used normally and to be followed by rinsing with water and vinegar to rebalance the pH of the hair.

Other natural methods for washing hair

A truly eco-sustainable way to wash your hair is Ghassoul or Rassoul (which derives from "Rassala" which in Arabic means "to wash" and it is hectorite to be precise), a soap clay that is mainly extracted in Morocco and Syria.
