So far we have come up with so many ways to be able to recycle your old toothbrush, but in some time our dear toothpaste could be retiring, thanks to a new discovery, carried out by some Japanese scientists at the University of Saskatchewan, who have invented one solar powered toothbrush, which does not require toothpaste.

Compared to a normal one toothbrush, this comes with a particular metal plate, able to create a chemical reaction in the mouth and the company Shiken, which makes toothbrushes, has decided to invest in researchers to see if their invention is capable of eliminate plaque and bacteria more effectively than a traditional toothbrush. If so, no more toothpaste and no more empty tubes in the trash, with considerable savings in energy and materials.

“I think it will work” - said the professor Kunio Komiyama, at the head of the team of researchers, which for over 15 years has been brushing his very white teeth with solar toothbrush. His work on this concept, in fact, it started in 1992: the first version contains a titanium dioxide rod (positioned in the neck of the toothbrush, just under the nylon bristles) and when the light hits the wet toothbrush, electrons are released in the mouth which, reacting with the acid naturally contained between teeth and gums, they help break down plaque on the teeth.

The model created later, from the name Soladey J3X, contains inside a real small solar panel, which thanks to a thread of lead carries the electrons on top of the toothbrush, up to the bristles. This way it is twice as effective as the other, but it only works with light.

Meanwhile, in his laboratory, Komiyama is testing a new toothbrush capable of destroying entire families of bacteria responsible for periodontitis.

It remains only to understand the amount of lead needed in the toothbrush and that tolerated by man (since it is a toxic substance) and how to solve the problem of breath!
