Away from the smoke if you are expecting a baby! Some US doctors have analyzed in detail the impact of smoking on pregnant women and the result is that even a single cigarette a day is already too much, because it increases the risk of a child dying from sudden infant death syndrome. Another reason to say goodbye to blondes at least in the nine months of waiting.

Not only then miscarriage o premature birth, the new study conducted at the Children's Center for Integrative Brain Research in Seattle and published in the scientific journal Pediatrics, highlights how smoking in the first year of life increases the risk of losing one's life by two times.

Conversely, pregnant women who significantly reduced their cigarette consumption saw their babies' risk of SIDS decreased by 12% compared to pregnant women who did not. According to the data, if mothers-to-be stopped smoking altogether, the risk would decrease by as much as 23%.

In short, the team of scholars has estimated that 800 of the approximately 3700 SIDS deaths that are recorded each year in the United States could be avoided if no woman smoked in the weeks before pregnancy and during the nine months of gestation.

"For pregnant women who cannot quit completely, any cigarette they smoke does not reduce the likelihood of their baby dying suddenly and unexpectedly from sudden infant death," said Tatiana Anderson, lead author of the study.

How to reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome?

Sudden infant death syndrome (or sudden infant death syndrome or unexpected infant death or "cot death") is a phenomenon that still has no explanation in the scientific community. It causes, in fact, the unexpected death of an apparently healthy baby and affects children in the first year of life. It is the most common cause of death between one month and one year of age, and about 90% of cases occur before six months of age, with cases peaking between two months and four months.

If rescued promptly, some infants can sometimes be resuscitated, but in these cases the risk of lpermanent brain exions.

Some risk factors for sudden infant death can be:

    • sleep in a prone position
    • sleeping in the parents' bed
    • lack of air circulation in the bed (through blankets, pillows, stuffed animals)
    • overheating
    • premature birth
    • drug use by the mother

Smoking in pregnancy has always been considered a risk factor. Today's study shows us how dangerous it is and how much should not be taken in reading such a vice.
