Shanghai: what is really happening to dogs in this tough new lockdown

Are domestic dogs and cats really at risk of culling in China following the resurgence of Covid-19 infections? Here's what's happening in Shanghai

A shocking film shot in is arousing great indignation Shanghai in which a health worker is seen beating a Corgi dog to death in the middle of the road. The episode rekindled the spotlight on the brutal strategy adopted by the Chinese city, paralyzed again by the severe lockdown, towards the pets of people who fell ill with Covid-19 and who are forced into isolation. But what is really going on in China? You risk a massacre of dogs? Let's try to clarify the matter.

The video in question was broadcast on the popular Chinese social network Weibo, but in a short time it also went viral on Facebook and Twitter. The footage shows an operator wearing a protective suit beating the poor dog to death.

In another photo that has circulated, the dead dog is then seen carried away in a plastic bag, as if it were waste.

The scene was shot in the Pudong district of Shanghai. To tell how things went was the owner of the dog himself, taken away with his family for quarantine in a centralized facility, after testing positive for Covid-19:

We were hoping to set him free like a stray dog. We didn't want him to starve. We never expected him to be beaten to death the moment we left.

The operator who killed the dog justified himself by saying that he had killed it because he thought that the animal represented a risk for the spread of the disease.

"We told the owner of the dog that we will discuss compensation with him later," the man explained to People's Daily Online, as if money could cancel this inhumane gesture.

Chinese cat and dog owners in panic

This absurd situation is throwing several pet owners into terror who could face a terrible fate.

I am so furious that I feel like crying - writes a user on social Weibo. - Is this Shanghai? What the hell are they doing ?!

It is not the first time that we have witnessed such cruel scenes in China. The killing of cats and dogs is part of the so-called “zero Covid” strategy.

Behind these extreme measures is the false belief - also denied by the WHO - that pets such as dogs and cats can transmit the Coronavirus to humans.

A few months ago another video on Weibo went viral showing two people in white anti-Covid overalls while they beat a poor dog inside the house of a woman who was elsewhere in quarantine, while a lady from Harbin (from the north-east of the country) had reported that his three cats had been culled by operators after testing positive for Covid.

But the citizens of Shanghai have no intention of remaining silent in the face of this grave injustice. For this reason, a campaign was launched on social networks to give a voice to their four-legged friends:
