Serafin Villaran: the man who built a medieval castle with the stones of a river

Stone by stone. This is how Serafin Villarán realized his dream of building a fairytale medieval-style castle himself in Cebolleros, a small community in the province of Burgos in northern Spain. With stubbornness and effort, using only stones from the nearby Nela and Trueba rivers and concrete, the simple welder from a local factory began construction of his Castillo de las Cuevas in 1978, at the age of 40.

With stubbornness and effort, using only the stones from the nearby Nela and Trueba rivers and concrete, the simple welder from a local factory began construction of his Castillo de las Cuevas in 1978, at the age of 40.

Serafin, in reality, as the family recounts, had never seen a real castle, but the drawings of the storybooks had so impressed him that he decided to follow the dream of creating a castle in which to live with his family. So he bought a piece of land and, without any real architectural knowledge, he began work on his masterpiece based only on his imagination and books on Spanish castles.

Unfortunately he didn't live long enough to finally see it finished, but the Castle of the Caves, or the Castle of the Caves, born thanks to the ambition, determination and hard work carried out with perseverance and patience on weekends by a simple man, has not remained incomplete. To take up the legacy of its creator and founder, after his death in 1998, was his daughter Yolanda, who completed the construction of this fairytale architectural marvel, located in a panoramic position in the Sierra de la Tesla.

The castle, on which Yolanda has invested around 1998 euros every year since 2.000, subtracted from the family budget for holidays, now it has five floors and a size of 300 square meters. In a mix of medieval and modern style, the rounded stones from the river give it a look authentic and original, which is attracting tourists from all over Spain.
