Selfish: the shocking short film that shows us how we are filling the oceans with plastic

Selfish: In a sushi restaurant, groups of humans eat fish, but three marine consumers are served plastic.

Selfish: In a sushi restaurant, while groups of humans eat delicious fish dishes, three marine consumers are served a plastic-based meal, carefully assembled by a muscular chef. This is what we do every day: we poison fish food with plastic pollutants and an ironic short film by Po Chien Chen tells it in an original and very powerful way.

Selfish is a play on words: it means "selfish" but it also contains the word "fish" or "fish". Yes, because with fish (and not only) we are very selfish: we feed them plastic, so much so that the finds of individuals full of our polluting material are more and more frequent.

A work conducted in 2016 by the World Economic Forum in collaboration with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation had estimated that by 2050, the oceans will welcome more plastic than fish.

Ocean pollution: in 2050 there will be more plastic than fish

Just a catastrophic prediction? Unfortunately not: in spite of those who claim that the alarming messages are only sensationalism, launched for who knows what hidden purpose hidden from us, the damages are real, very evident for those who want to see, therefore these are not deliberately catastrophic forecasts, but highly probable scenarios of announced disasters.

“Two years ago an experience on a small island in Taiwan changed my life - says the author of the short film - I was very close to the sea, having to drive only 10 minutes to reach it. Everyone could enjoy the white sand and turquoise sea. At the time, I practiced snorkelling almost every week. The sight of beautiful tropical fish and coral reefs is still fixed in my head. But I can't forget the tons of human waste left on the water's edge as if they were part of the nature of the place ".

Tons of human waste: four words that should render the disaster we are carrying out with our hands very well.

The plastic island is growing dramatically: it is 3 times the size of France

“Today our planet suffers from the waste we produce. Countless animals ingest pieces of plastic. The plastic island in the Pacific Ocean, which can contain heavy metals and chemical compounds, is already three times the size of France. But the karma is here: research found microplastics in our daily foods, body and human feces. Nobody wants this, but only our actions can make a difference ”.

Oh yes, because all in all our behavior is much more than "banal" selfishness: destroying the planet means destroying us, and we risk realizing it when it is too late.

Scampi and prawns from Sardinia heavily contaminated by microplastics. I study

The short film was presented worldwide and won numerous awards this year, such as 'Best Animation' at Borrego Springs Film Festival, 'Best Animation' at Ocean City Film Festival, 'Best Animated Micro Film' Oregon short film festivals and more.

And U.S? Do we want to continue being so Selfish (as well as scarcely interested in our future)?
