Using them, they could save thousands of liters of water every year. Are the self-cleaning dishes designed by the Swedish design studio Tomorrow Machine. A double solution, which on the one hand saves the unpleasant task of washing dishes and on the other favors reduction of consumption water and detergents used for this purpose.

I dishes self-cleaning are impregnated with a special coating and are designed to mimic leaves of the lotus plant. In this way, any traces of dirt or liquid simply slide off. And instead of using liters and liters of water for cleaning after meals, simply throw the food waste directly into the compost.

What is the 'secret' material that allows for this? It is a coating consisting of a wax dissolved at high pressure and temperature which thus repels water, oil and dirt.

The prototype of this plate was created to show the qualities of this new cellulose-based material developed by Innventia, light but strong and which can be molded into double curved surfaces.

“The product not only saves resources during the production process but also over its entire life cycle, requiring no water and chemicals to keep it clean,” say the designers.

Cellulose pulp comes first divided into sheets, then it is pressed into a hot mold. At that point, the material becomes hard like ceramic but with some advantages: it is light and does not break in case of falls and bumps, such as ensures Hanna Billqvist, one of the creators. But it is a technology still under development, not yet ready for commercial diffusion.

The team argues that the coating is good for the environment, as it would also reduce the emissions generated byl heating the water used for washing and the use of soap would be avoided.
