Forced to tow a boat with some children inside. A terrible scene, which is going around the world. Two sea lions, locked up in the Mont Mosan park in Liège, were filmed as they were struggling to pull a small boat with a rope tied around its neck.

The video was shot in the Mont Mosan zoological park in Huy, in the province of Liège. Immediate indignation of animal welfare associations, certain that these creatures do all this only to be rewarded with fish.

The animals were filmed swimming, like a real aquatic attraction, in the park of Mont Mosan. Once they emerged around the corner, the sea lions swam with a blue ring attached to their necks and a rope tied to a boat with three children on board.

The footage was shared by Aaron Copette of the animal rights organization C'est Asz on Facebook.

According to the association, which launched a petition, on 7 August 2020 an internet user shared the video shot at Mont Mosan Park with C'est Assesz. Seen more than 500.000 times, it has aroused public outrage, shocked by the fact that even in 2020 such acts may still occur within the European Union.

“Sea lions are wild and sensitive animals that adapt very well to their natural environment. Sometimes they can dive up to 180 meters into the ocean where they lead complex social and cultural lives. As a result, their living conditions in a concrete tank filled with chlorinated water do not stand up to comparison. According to our information, they perform the same show twice a day, every day, every week, for a ration of fish, which is essential to ensure their obedience. In any case, this is not natural or voluntary behavior. There are no pedagogical topics to remember, the goal is to entertain the crowd, not to mention the financial interest that the sea lions represent ”explains the association.

The latter has launched a petition asking the director of the park and the Minister of the environment to put an end to the attractions that favor these "interactions" between the sea lions and the public.

The hope is that they will stop exploiting these animals by sending them to a place more suited to their physiological needs.
