THESaudi Arabia, the largest producer of Petroleum in the world, he revealed plans relating to his own energy future, declaring that it is ready to become a country powered 100% by renewable energy and low environmental impact. This is what emerged from statements made by an influential member of the royal family.

Such a process could take decades and there are some rather skeptical detractors about it, but the prince Turki Al Faisal Al Saud, creator of the King Faisai Foundation and one of the most important spokespersons of the Arab state, said at the Global Economic Symposium held in Brazil, to nurture the hope that their kingdom will become entirely powered by renewable energy and low environmental impact within a few decades, even if such a revolutionary process could take much longer.

Despite this, he pointed out that the investments Saudi Arabia may be directed in the future towards the alternative energy sector at the expense of fossil fuels, including oil, so that black gold reserves still present can be used not for the production of fuel, but for other needs, such as the production of polymers and plastics.

Oil, in his opinion, should be exploited for really useful goods and not as a fuel or fuel, as it could easily be replaced in the latter two cases. The Arab prince believes that such a turnaround could be of vital importance to the planet. Joss Garman, political director of Greenpeace, has expressed himself in this regard, arguing that it is amazing that a spokesman for Saudi Arabia is speaking in favor of renewables, as the British Chancellor George Osborne does not seem able to do. But in his opinion, Saudi Arabia can only be considered truly turned to the green economy when oil will no longer be extracted for any reason.

Saudi Arabia currently bases its energy needs almost entirely on fossil sources, two thirds of which are made up of oil, while the remainder refers to natural gas. The Arab kingdom accounts for 12% of world oil production and owns a fifth of the world's oil resources, according to data collected by the US government's Energy Information Administration.

Saudi Arabia, according to the prince spokesperson, would however have enormous potential in the development of sectors related tosolar power, also since its costs at the moment would represent only 15% compared to what was estimated 20 years ago, at a time when the rest of the world seemed to be certain that it would continue to exploit fossil fuels for a very long time to come. So the time has come run for cover in fear that the black gold may sooner or later run out?
