A BBC survey shows how the trend on social media is increasing the frequency of this barbaric mutilation

The British newspaper BBC conducted an investigation with gruesome implications on the spread of an absurd and violent social trend: cut dogs' ears to make them more aesthetically pleasing. The barbaric practice is carried out directly by the breeders of the puppies, who sell the already mutilated animals - convinced that they have made them more beautiful and ignoring the unnecessary suffering they have caused. This activity is obviously illegal in the UK, prohibited by the Animal Welfare Act: for this reason, breeders provide dogs with false passports to evade controls and certify that the mutilation took place abroad.

There was no justification for this atrocious practice, which could lead to serious problems for the dogs - he explains Paula Poyden, of the Dogs Trust association. - Animals often develop infections and other problems that they carry with them throughout their lives, such as difficulty communicating with their peers or with humans due to hearing impairment.

An undercover BBC reporter tracked down some breeders posting ads for mutilated ear dogs online: one of them offered a puppy with his ears cropped for 13.000 pounds, assuring that he would arrive including a foreign passport to cover the illegal mutilation. But not only that: the breeder said it is "a real shame" that this practice is banned in the UK, as it makes dogs much more pleasant and beautiful. Another breeder offered to recover fake passport and microchip to hide the illegal practice at the modest price of 500 pounds: the documents would come from Turkey and, as the breeder assures, are valid for taking the dog around Europe without problems.

Ear cropping is illegal mutilation that is performed for no other reason than for aesthetic reasons - there are no health benefits to these dogs - he says. Daniella Dos Santos, former president of the British Veterinary Association (BVA). Once again, animals are viewed as commodities and money-making machines rather than living beings with their own sensibilities. The reason this is happening is because there is a loophole that allows for dogs with cropped ears to be imported.

The fashion of these hideously mutilated dogs has spread thanks to social media and celebrity posts - including the singer Leigh-Anne Pinnock or the sportsman Marcus Rashford - who proudly display their dogs with cropped ears. Thanks to the trends launched on social networks, mutilated dogs are in great demand and are worth a fortune for the breeders who sell them: the associations in defense of dogs estimate that each puppy is worth up to 1.500 pounds more on the market after mutilation.
