After dying from Xylella some olive trees in Salve were covered with a weed that turned them into elephants

He is about to end up run over, his mother saves him

They have renamed it the "nature reserve of elephants" but in reality they are fields of olive trees attacked by the Xylella and then abandoned. Now the trees have been covered with a weed that has made them look like majestic green elephants.

The photo of this unusual olive plantation, now completely transformed first by Xylella and then by Ipomea Indica, was shared on social media by Marco Cavalera, a lover of the territory and tour guide of the Archès association.

We are in the territory of Salve, in the province of Lecce, and right here the weed has "attacked" the olive trees, creating a more unique than rare scenario.

The nature around the crypt of San Pantaleone has taken over and only in the last few days has it been realized what it had managed to create. The undisturbed weed vegetation has "colonized" the area, transforming the landscape with very suggestive shapes that recall exotic scenarios with elephants but which at the same time remind us of the drama experienced by these olive trees.

The Ipomea, in fact, was able to expand so extensively in the area precisely because of the Xylella that made the olive trees sick and then killed which consequently were abandoned.

As Piero Medagli, professor of botany at the University of Salento, explained to the Quotidiano di Puglia:

The plant in the photo looks like Ipomea Indica, an exotic plant that has spread spontaneously. Like all imported plants it is cultivated, but in this case it got out of control, the seeds dispersed by the wind allowed it to reproduce in these places. It is very invasive and usually poses a problem. In this case it has created a very beautiful scenographic effect, because it is located in an isolated place and has spread over the dead trees in a completely abandoned place. The Ipomea Indica, very invasive and ground cover, is able, in a short time, to wrap around fences, nets, fences or whatever is nearby. Compared to the Convolvolus it grows faster, is more invasive and rigorous and clings everywhere, it does not only invade dead olive trees, as in this case, but also in those in good health.
