Roundup, Monsanto's pesticide may be causing the rise in gluten intolerances

A comparative study claims that Monsanto Roundup's pesticide is responsible for the increase in cases of gluten intolerance

A new study, carried out by two American scientists, argues that increased use of the glyphosate, Monsanto's pesticide known by the trade name of Roundup, it could be the cause of the growth of cases of celiac disease, gluten intolerance but also of the syndrome of the irritable bowel.

La Celiac Disease and more generally gluten hypersensitivity is a growing problem around the world, especially in North America and Europe, where the latest statistics speak of 5% of the population concerned. Symptoms of those who cannot tolerate gluten can include nausea, diarrhea, rashes, anemia but also mood problems and an increased risk of thyroid disease, kidney failure and cancer.

In the report, by Anthony Samsel and Stephanie Seneff, it is argued that glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup be the most important factor that it is causing this "epidemic" of intolerances. The document written by the two scientists reads that: “Fish exposed to glyphosate develop digestive problems similar to celiac disease. Celiac disease is associated with imbalances in intestinal bacteria which can be explained by considering the known effects of glyphosate on intestinal bacteria ”.

But there is more: "Glyphosate is known to inhibit the enzymes of cytochrome P450, an enizmatic family involved in the detoxification of environmental toxins, in the activation of vitamin D3, in the catabolism of vitamin A, in the maintenance of bile production and in the supply of sulfate to the intestine. Deficiencies in iron, cobalt, molybdenum, copper and other rare metals associated with celiac disease can also be attributed to the strong ability of glyphosate to chelate these elements ".

The extent of the news is of worldwide interest given that the glyphosate from Monsanto seems to have become the best-selling herbicide in the world, also given the growth in production of Roundup Ready GM wheat, precisely by Monsanto.

The report makes use of a substantial bibliographic part which refers to the scientific research examined and ends with an appeal to governments to reconsider policies relating to the safety of glyphosate residues in food.
