How to prepare and use rice water for hair

Rice water can be used in different ways on the hair.

Soaking technique

THEsoaking is the simplest method and quick to prepare rice water. All you need is uncooked rice (any kind is fine), water, a bowl, a colander, and a spray bottle. (You can also add essential oils to perfume and have more benefits.)

Procedure:

  • Put ½ cup of uncooked rice in a bowl
  • Add 2-3 cups of hot water
  • Let it soak for about 30 minutes in the bowl before straining the rice
  • Pour the filtered water into a spray bottle (or any container).

Apply it to freshly washed hair, leave it on for 5 to 10 minutes and then rinse before using the conditioner.

Boiling: rice cooking water

It is similar to soaking, but heat is involved. In practice, it is the water that remains after we have cooked the rice and can be used on the hair. All you need is uncooked rice, water, a saucepan, a colander, and a spray bottle (or any container). Procedure:

  • Put ½ cup of uncooked rice in the pot
  • Add more water than usual (about 1 or 2 cups)
  • Cook the rice over medium heat until the water begins to boil
  • You can scoop the excess water over the rice or wait for the rice to be cooked and then strain the liquid into a spray bottle
  • If desired, add a few drops of essential oil, such as rosemary, lavender, or chamomile

Use it after shampooing, sprinkling rice water on damp hair. Leave on for 5 to 20 minutes, massaging the scalp and then rinse.

Fermented rice water

Although the first two methods are easy and efficient, fermenting takes a little more time and patience. The technique helps restore and balance the highs pH levels present in normal rice water. Fermented water has a high amount of antioxidants, which increase vitamins and nutrient levels, in turn helping to protect and nourish the hair. Procedure:

  • Combine the uncooked rice and warm water in a bowl (similar to the soaking method)
  • Let it soak for about 30 minutes before straining the rice
  • Pour the liquid into a jar and leave it at room temperature for 24 hours
  • Move the jar to the refrigerator (so it doesn't spoil and leave a stink) for up to two to three days
  • Transfer the rice water to a spray bottle
  • Add 1 to 2 cups of hot water and spray on your hair.

Regardless of the method used, apply the rice water once a week for best results.

Alternative uses

Rice water is not only good for hair; in fact, it can also be used as cleanser to firm the skin and improve blood circulation precisely because it is rich in natural antioxidants, essential amino acids and vitamins.
