Are you horrified at the gruesome TV abuse of animals? If on our channels series continue to circulate in which gratuitous violence and the violation of animal protection regulations are now commonplace, Al Jazeera tries a different path with Wildlife Warzone, a reality show that aims to raise awareness of poaching against rhinos.

The protagonists of the series, in fact, will be some trainee ranger engaged in aanti-poaching action, a bargain with value dthe 17 billions of dollars per year fueled by demand in Asia, where rhino horn is believed to have unproven medicinal properties. The series consists of 6 episodes of 25 minutes each and follows the new recruits, from military training to entering the field.

It is 38 hard days, during which they have no access to the outside world. They are pushed to their limits, both physically and mentally. But it is necessary: the wildlife ranger is one of the most dangerous jobs in the world. Every night in Africa gun battles rage between South African wildlife ranger protectors and the numerous criminal gangs.

“Many of the trainees want to become rangers to protect their habitat. There is no doubt in my mind, I love what I am about to do. It is pto protect the rhinos, to protect what I love" explains the trainee Nabiel Leon. For others, the course is also a way out of poverty. As trainee Lunga Nyawe says, “I hope this will change my life. I don't want to get stuck here and I don't have a chance to go further in life ”. Vincent Barkas, Head of Training at Protrack Company, describes the challenges to the trainees: “You are about to be equipped with a semi-automatic weapon at the end of the training. You will have a thousandth of a second to decide whether to pull the trigger or not ”.

It can be a dangerous job, but would-be rangers consider it a privilege to be in contact with and protect wildlife, helping to save a species from extinction. Wildlife Warzone is partly filmed in the Shamwari Game Reserve, Eastern Cape. It will air from Monday 7 October at 22:30 pm on Al Jazeera. There will be additional airings on Tuesdays at 09:30 am, Wednesdays at 03:30 am, and Thursdays at 16:30 pm.
