The British government will auction off four offshore blocks for the construction of wind farms that will provide the country with clean energy in its plan to progressively say goodbye to fossil and nuclear sources over 10 years.

Il UK is seriously considering solutions for reduce emissions from fossil fuels and to replace nuclear and coal plants within ten years.

The government has estimated that investments of up to 100 billion pounds could be needed for the country to switch to cleaner energies within the next ten years and has decided to carry out a first step to speed up the transition towards the use of renewable sources.

The United Kingdom will in fact launch a competition to lease areas in which the winning companies will be able to install offshore wind farms.

The competition is expected to attract investment for 20 billion pounds and the wind turbines will be able to supply the country's grid with 7 gigawatts, equal to the energy produced by about eight medium-sized nuclear power plants.

The blocks identified by the government on which the wind turbines will be installed are four: they are offshore areas which could attract the interest of investors as the depth of the seabed is approximately 60 meters and the areas border on existing wind projects.

Also today costs associated with wind power have decreased and technological advances allow larger and more productive turbines to be installed.

The auction will be managed by The Crown Estate, a company that manages the waters around England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

"With the huge cost savings that have occurred with offshore wind, technology will have a key role to play in decarbonising the UK energy system," said Huub den Rooijen, Crown Director of Energy, Minerals and Infrastructure. Summer.

Blocks could be awarded to the winning companies as early as 2021 but for the new plants to start producing clean energy, we will have to wait another ten years.
