Record drought in California: measures are taken to reduce water consumption in homes

The drought that has hit California is a very serious problem and a national priority that is starting to require some sacrifices. The lack of water is in fact prolonging with dramatic consequences and this has led to the intervention of one of the most important public water distributors

Il Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD), the largest public water operator in Southern California, has announced that, due to the prolonged drought, it is forced to introduce emergency measures that limit water consumption for the first time in history.

MWD said the restrictions are linked to dependence on water supply from Northern California, which has also been severely affected by the drought.

The new measures, which will affect a population of about 6 million people (inhabitants of the counties of Los Angeles, Ventura and San Bernardino), will come into force on June 20st and will allow for a 30% -XNUMX% reduction in consumption.

As MWD Director General Adel Hagekhalil said:

The reality is that this drought has left us without the water supply needed to meet the normal demands in these areas. To make sure they have enough water for their basic human health and safety needs, everyone in these communities must immediately and dramatically reduce their water use.

The new restrictions provide for the possibility of irrigate outdoor spaces only one day a week. A measure that may seem ineffective to us but it is not considering that many American homes (as well as schools and public places) have large gardens and outdoor spaces.

The fines for those who break the rules, among other things, will be very severe. That's $ 2.000 per acre foot for agency-supplied water beyond limits.

Hagekhalil has also already warned that if not enough water is saved in the coming months, or if supply conditions deteriorate further, all water destined for irrigation of outdoor spaces could be blocked in these communities as early as September.
