Don't store avocado like this: it's dangerous

After thousands of years of absence, bison will return to repopulate Great Britain. And the bodies that deal with the reintroduction of the species have launched an unprecedented job offer. Two rangers are being sought to look after the bison, which is expected to arrive in 2022. Candidates are not required to have any previous experience with these mighty mammals. It will be enough to have a strong passion for nature and animals and have knowledge in the ecological field.

The return of the bison to the United Kingdom

The European bison is the largest land mammal on our continent and is the heir to the ancient steppe bison that lived in the UK up to thousands of years ago. After a long absence, this species will finally return to populate the country thanks to a project carried out by Kent Wildlife Trust together with The Wildwood Trust and funded with around £ XNUMX million raised through the popular postcode lottery.

The initiative is called Wilder Blean and will leave in April 2022 with a herd of four European bison, one male and three females. The animals, which will come from countries such as Poland and Holland (where the repopulation program of the species has been successful), will move within a fenced area of about 500 hectares, within the Blean National Nature Reserve. Woods.

Bison are huge mammals, and male specimens can reach up to a ton in weight. They usually like to rub against trees and eat bark. But this behavior has positive implications for the ecosystem because the dead bark fragments are useful to other plants, fungi and small animals. Hence, the presence of bison will help create a diverse and more favorable habitat for other plant and animal species in the area.

The two promoters of the Wilder Blean project have already started looking for two rangers who will have to take care of the five mammals that will arrive in the United Kingdom and have launched a decidedly out of the ordinary job proposal.

As anticipated, people who have no previous experience with bison can also be nominated, as long as they are passionate about fauna and have knowledge on the subject. The two sought-after figures will have to take care of them, leaving them free to follow their natural behavior patterns to promote biodiversity. Rangers will be responsible for licensing, health checks, security and fence maintenance. Furthermore, they will have to better manage the contacts between the bison and any visitors.

"This is a very unique role in the UK." announced Stan Smith of the Kent Wildlife Trust. “It is an opportunity that allows you to manage a herd of the largest living land mammal in Europe and to develop completely new skills useful for this project and for future ones. This is a first step in turning European bison into resources for the restoration of ecosystems in Britain. And the two rangers will be able to know this species like no other ".
