PureMadi and MadiDrops, natural filters from the earth to purify water in thirsty countries

While in developed countries it is enough to open a tap to access drinking water, in some parts of the world, people, especially women, have to walk for miles just to reach the nearest source of fresh water. And even after you've collected it, miles and miles away from home, there's no guarantee it's safe to drink. It is precisely to solve this type of problem, fundamental for the survival of many populations, that a team of researchers from the University of Virginia created the PureMadi and MadiDrops filters.

Purify the water with ... the earth. While in developed countries to access drinking water just open a tap, in some parts of the world, people, especially women, have to walk miles just to get to the nearest freshwater source.

And even after collecting it, miles and miles away from home, there is not no guarantee that it is potable. It is precisely to solve this type of problem, fundamental for the survival of many populations, that a team of researchers from the University of Virginia has created i filtri PureMadi e MadiDropsimplemented with specific and natural materials.

Although made with similar materials and animated by the same principles of solidarity and cooperation, the two filters are different in their functioning (and not only). PureMadi, in fact, looks like one sort of vase and mechanically removes water particles, killing harmful microbes inside. The filters, which are produced locally in the villages, start at one mixture of clay, sawdust and water, which is subsequently pressed into a mold and baked in an oven.

The cooking process burns the sawdust and creates holes that allow very small water molecules to pass, while harmful particles are trapped. In addition, a silver coating over the entire surface of the filter kills bacteria and other microbes present in the water. The filtration process does not take a timed treatment: once all the water has passed through the filter, the 99,9% of pathogens will have been removed.

The other filter, on the other hand, MadiDrops is in the form of a kind of tablet. Likewise, it simply goes into the bucket containing the water to purify it. Also in this case the silver in the filter will kill bacteria and other microbes present in the water. MadiDrops, however, does not remove harmful particles like PureMadi does. But these second filters are also much cheaper to produce and easier to transport. Finally, if MadiDrops lasts around six months, PureMadi is effective for up to five years.
