The unfortunate report came from the manager of the “Il Glauco” bathing establishment, Marco Verrecchia, who noticed the presence of a small whale beached right in front of his establishment. The size suggests a puppy, a sub-adult. The death of the cetacean did not leave indifferent even the Minister of the Environment Sergio Costa, who gave the news through his social channels.
“This is a very rare species of Minke whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) found by the Port Authority - Coast Guard on the beaches of Fregene, on the Roman coast. Investigations are now underway to identify whether the cause of death is natural or not. An undoubtedly unusual finding, this demonstrates once again how fauna is changing its behavior due to the lack, or reduction, of human activity ”, wrote the head of the Dicastery in a post on Facebook.

“The presence of the minke whale in our sea is quite an exceptional event. In 2016 we had a rare encounter during one of our scheduled ferry monitoring in the Sardinian Sea. Precisely because they are defined as minor, these whales have modest dimensions. Generally it reaches 7-10 meters in length. One of the peculiarities of this species is the presence of white bands on the central dorsal part of the pectoral fins ”, writes the NPO Accademia del Leviatano, which deals with the study and protection of marine mammals.
A species considered occasional for the Mediterranean, and therefore rarely seen. It is the smallest species of its genus, with a length of approximately 6,5-8m in adults. Despite its size, however, it is a real whale, which like its common "cousin" feeds on plankton that filters through the baleen.
In a period where man retreats and nature comes back to life giving a show, this is truly a very sad discovery. The animal has now been recovered and delivered to the zooprophylactic institute, which will carry out analyzes of the case in the next few days to find out the cause of death.
