In the month of September Hurricane Maria has forever disrupted the lives of the inhabitants of Puerto Rico, the storm, the strongest that has hit the Caribbean island in nearly 90 years, has brought death and destruction for at least 30 billion dollars. Many inconveniences, but we try to start from a primary good: clean water obtained through solar energy.

Maria is the second largest hurricane to hit the Caribbean, bending the entire country which, as we know, thrives mainly on tourism. For this reason, there are many who are contributing to the reconstruction: companies, celebrities from the world of entertainment, cinema, etc., send funding, so that the population can slowly return to normal.

Even before rebuilding the houses swept away by the dam, it is necessary to think about the primary goods: in Puerto Rico after a month, we still live without drinking water and without electricity.

In particular, the water is contaminated because a site of hazardous waste it ended up in the wells and until there is reclamation, the problem is to be classified as a water emergency.

Untreated sewage continues to pour into Puerto Rican rivers, right where people are forced to wash and do laundry. While a real political battle is underway, people are suffering from climate disasters. Hurricane Maria destroyed 80% of the crops, so the situation is critical also in terms of food.

A helping hand is being offered by the Pure Foundation, a non-profit association that supports the community by offering drinking water derived from solar energy thanks to Waterbox, a filtering system that ensures the possibility of drinking it.

A system that can purify thousands of gallons of water which are then distributed by volunteers to families. There are, in fact, some real centers scattered on the island, here in addition to offering water, they also provide food.

“We are in Puerto Rico every two weeks, the situation is very difficult. It is even complicated to find flights, marry quantities of goods, organize communication and find financing. But the population needs all our support and renewable energy helps us a lot in this regard, ”explains Jennifer Rice, executive vice president of the Pure Foundation.

We talked about how to produce drinking water from solar energy here:

Having potable water in many other parts of the planet is taken for granted: there is plenty of it from the tap and sometimes the waste is unlimited. But here, this primary good is guaranteed only through another primary element or the Sun, whose rays penetrate inside the filtering system and make it work perfectly.

And in a place where people currently live without electricity, this is almost a miracle.
