A systematic review

According to research, it appears that an excessive dose of supplements selenium and vitamin E can be harmful to health. In a study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, researchers used data from toenail samples collected from 31.117 men to explore whether selenium levels in the body could influence the risk of prostate cancer.

The results found no correlation between existing levels of selenium or vitamin E in the body and the risk of contracting the disease. However, they established a connection between men with high selenium levels, who took a supplement alone or in combination with vitamin E, and were more likely to develop prostate cancer than patients who were taking a placebo.

But not only was there a connection between taking a selenium supplement and prostate cancer risk, the results also found that only patients who had low baseline selenium levels in their systems, and who were taking supplements of vitamin E alone, they were 111% more likely to develop prostate cancer than patients taking a placebo.


Scholars have concluded that thetaking high-dose supplements carried more risks than benefits; in fact, i researchers have come to the firm conclusion that high dosages of any vitamin or mineral supplement are not recommended. Therefore, instead of filling any deficiencies in the diet with daily pills, it is advisable to opt for a healthy diet complete with all vitamins and minerals.
