When do plants need fertilizer?
Plants only have limited water and light to grow and thrive. For healthy growth, plants in the garden and on the balcony also need a lot of nutrients, especially nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.
If the plants are growing poorly or producing only a few flowers and fruit, this can be a sign of nutrient deficiency. Rolled, discolored leaves or purple discolored shoots also indicate poor nutrient supply. In order not to get to this point, the plants should be fertilized on the balcony, terrace or garden between March and October every 14 days.

The best known fertilizer that you can make yourself for free is: compost. It is rich in calcium, magnesium, potassium and phosphorus - and therefore almost superfood for plants

If you don't have compost, you can also recycle individual “more” nutritious waste for your plants, in particular:
- coffee grounds
- onion
- egg shells
- rice cooking or rinsing water
- banana peel
and transform them into precious natural fertilizers.

The coffee grounds

If you are a lover of this drink, do not throw away used coffee grounds. They are an excellent source of nitrogen for the soil, rich in antioxidants. In addition, coffee grounds have a low pH and are therefore particularly suitable for fertilizing plants that like acid soil, such as hydrangeas, rhododendrons, courgettes or cucumbers.
How to make a fertilizer from coffee grounds
Let the coffee grounds dry in a colander or on a tray so they don't get moldy. Then simply sprinkle the dry coffee grounds around the plants and cover with some potting soil. Coffee grounds can also be used to make liquid fertilizer: to do this, mix the coffee grounds with water and add them to the irrigation water for the plants every two weeks.

Egg shells

No longer dispose of eggshells in organic waste, but use them to create a valuable plant fertilizer. Eggshells are made up almost exclusively of calcium carbonate, which is very good for plants such as:

- tomatoes

How does it work? Simply grind the shells finely, distribute them around the plants and water as usual.

Onion peels
You can pour hot water over the onion skins and leave them to infuse for half an hour. When the onion "broth" has cooled, use liquid plant fertilizer.
