    Portable photovoltaic: costs and what to know about solar panels that you can carry around

    In looking for solutions to the expensive bills, portable solar panels can also be of help. To recharge portable equipment on campers but also in tents, it is possible to use these devices which, unlike the standard ones, are easy to carry. With very variable costs

    He is about to end up run over, his mother saves him

    To that if we are not at home but on an itinerant trip we can produce electricity from the sun: solar water showers but also low-cost portable panels are now available and help us reduce consumption (and therefore bills).

    As the camping club portal 'The camping and caravanning club' explains, there are several ways to use the power of the sun to make camping life easier. The solar showers they have been on the market for many years and work through a container (black to minimize photon losses) which fills with water and is left to heat up in the sun. With this system you get hot water that is released through a shower head.

    It is actually an economical way of using solar energy which is also replicated in more sophisticated installations for homes, where the solar panels on the roof contain water which is heated and which, in turn, heats the water used inside. of the building.

    But for something even more useful for our camping life we can use portable solar panels, with which we produce electricity from the sun that we can use to power our appliances. As for all panels, even for portable ones it is possible to store the energy in a battery to be able to use it in a moment of less irradiation.

    And, as for all panels, the same precautions apply to increase their efficiency, some of which are listed below.

    • Panels must be exposed to direct sunlight (behind a window it may take up to three times as long to supply the same charge to a battery, even in broad daylight on a sunny day), remembering the inclination varies according to latitude and time of day (at noon in our latitudes about 65%, less in the afternoon);
    • Some portable solar panels come with all the connectors needed to connect them to the battery, while others can be permanently attached to the unit and supplied with a suitable fixing kit. Before buying, it is helpful to think about how these will be used (including whether they will normally be placed in full sun);
    • The energy generated by a solar panel is direct current (DC), so if you want to use it to power something that would normally plug into a 230V three-hole household outlet it needs to be converted to alternating current (AC) and then it's an inverter is required;
    • A solar panel is also great for keep the battery charged during winter storage, especially if for a caravan or motor home with a battery powered alarm system. But even here, be careful: to take into account the low levels of light in winter you may need a 20W panel or more;
    • The powers indicated on the technical characteristics are entirely nominal: those actually generated depend on many factors to be taken into account (time of year, phase of the day, inclination, etc.)

    What about the costs? Taking a tour on the net you will find very variable prices, which depend on the nominal power, the size, the presence or not of an integrated battery, etc. However, a single product of good quality generally does not exceed i 500-600 euro.

    To be taken into consideration for more sustainable and economical holidays.
