Pollution. What consequences of exposure in children? A shocking new study has revealed a significant association between smog, birth problems and risk of malformations.

The study, published in the Journal of Pediatrics, highlighted how women exposed to air pollution during the gestation period see an increased risk of their children being born with defects and malformations such as cleft lip or abnormal palate.

To reach this conclusion, the researchers compared birth data from the Ohio Department of Health and particle data from the US Environmental Protection Agency's 57 monitoring stations across Ohio. All this obviously with the aim of studying the impact of atmospheric pollutants on children's development.

The researchers calculated the average exposure to pollution by linking the geographic coordinates of the mother's residence for each birth with the nearest monitoring station. Thus, the association between birth anomalies and exposure of the mother to too high levels of fine particles during pregnancy was noted. The most sensitive exposure time was found to be the month before and after conception.

Dr SP Byotra, of the internal medicine department at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital said:

“In urban areas there is poor ventilation, dust, mites, pollen, which make the air quality extremely unhealthy for breathing. Children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with respiratory problems suffer the most ”.

But how does it affect the IQ of the little ones? In this regard, Dr. Praveen Gupta, Director of the Department of Neurology at the Fortis Memorial Research Institute in New Delhi, spoke:

“With the current scenario, the situation is getting worse: air pollution has negative effects on children, causes irritability, a sense of suffocation, decreased attention and concentration that leads to poor performance. Their blood travels to different parts of the body including the brain which can cause decreased IQ levels and other related problems "

A situation therefore absolutely not to be underestimated. Pollution really hurts us in many ways and it is children who often suffer the most from it. To learn more about the topic, read also:
