Pollution can cause autism: new research blames styrene and chromium

Air pollution: High concentrations of styrene and chromium are the cause of autism in children, according to a new study

Don't store avocado like this: it's dangerous

Smog and autism: back it spectrum of pollution on children's health. This time, the high concentrations of styrene e chrome would be the cause of the autism spectrum disorders (ASD) in childhood.

According to a new research conducted byUniversity of Pittsburghin fact, pollution could be the cause of autism: children with autism would have been more likely to have been exposed to high levels of certain toxic substances in the air during their mother's pregnancy and in the first two years of life.

"Despite its severe social impact, the causes of autism are poorly understood", supports Evelyn Talbott, principal investigator on the study and professor of epidemiology at Pitt Public Health. “Very few autism studies have included environmental exposures as well, while taking into account other personal and behavioral risk factors. Our analysis is an addition to the small but growing body of research that considers air toxins as one of the risk factors for ASD. "

RESEARCH - Talbott and his colleagues compared 217 families of children with ASD born between 2005 and 2009 and living in six Pennsylvania counties and estimated lexposure to as many as 30 pollutants that cause alterations of the endocrine system or neurological development problems. In this way, based on the baby's exposure to concentrations of toxic substances in the air during the mother's pregnancy and the first two years of life, the researchers found links between increased levels of chromium and styrene and childhood autism, a condition that affects one in 68 children (after also considering data such as the mother's age, maternal smoking during pregnancy, race and education).

Styrene is used in the production of plastics and paints (and also results from gasoline in cars), while chromium is the typical result of industrial processes and hardening of steel, but it can also come from power plants.

In short, this research once again places the accent on air pollution, a frightening lethal weapon capable of triggering diseases even in children who have yet to be born. It will always be too late when it is understood that with an eco-sustainable urban transport and with green political series, billions could be saved and a lot of human lives could be saved.
