How to get rid of mushroom flies

Mushroom flies (family Mycetophilidae and Sciaroidea) are common parasites, just under 7 millimeters large, black with long legs and can be found around potted plants. Their life cycle is very short (about 3-4 weeks) and includes four stages of development: egg, larva, pupa and adult. The female can lay up to 200 eggs, from which the larvae hatch after just one week. The larvae feed on plant roots, for this reason they are extremely dangerous for our potted plants.

Mushroom flies are attracted to light and you may first notice them at night, flying around lamps or electronic devices with lighting, but they are also attracted to very humid soils, so the possible cause of an infestation could be incorrect watering. A small population of midges rarely causes significant damage, but large numbers can be a serious problem. Infected potted plants may show signs of wilting, loss of vigor, poor growth, and yellowing.

As we have already said, the hydrogen peroxide (commonly known as hydrogen peroxide) can help you save your plants from a midges infestation. As long as you water your pots with a solution of hydrogen peroxide and normal water. This process can continue for several weeks, depending on the severity of the infestation, or in any case until the situation is completely under control. Hydrogen peroxide will succeed kill all larvae of midges present in your plants. To ensure that the remedy is fully effective, it is better to have a freshly purchased bottle of hydrogen peroxide rather than one that has already been used.

Others useful advice to be followed are:

  • avoid watering the soil excessively and letting it dry out between waterings;
  • use a new and high quality soil;
  • provide good drainage to be able to control humidity levels (when this is high, midges will be much more attracted to it).

By following these simple strategies you will be able to grow and enjoy your plants without any problems.
