Planet Solar: record of the solar-powered boat. In 22 days, from Spain to the Caribbean

A fully solar-powered transatlantic crossing from Las Palmas, Spain, to Marigot St. Martin, in the French Antilles, in the heart of the Caribbean. Planet Solar's MS Turanor succeeded, the largest boat in the world to have traveled thanks to the sun for such a long journey in just 22 days, 12 hours and 32 minutes.

A transatlantic crossing completely ad solar power, from Las Palmas, Spain, to Marigot St. Martin, in the French Antilles, in the heart of the Caribbean. Planet Solar's MS Turanor succeeded, the largest boat in the world to have traveled thanks to the sun for such a long journey in just 22 days, 12 hours and 32 minutes.

After leaving Las Palmas on April 25 at 23 pm local time, the largest solar boat to the world reached Marigot, St. Martin last May 18, at 06:32, 22 days later, thus breaking his own world speed record for a 26-day solar-powered transatlantic crossing on her voyage around the world.

The special boat will remain moored in the idyllic port of Fort Louis Marina in Marigot from 18 to 22 May, and then set sail for Miami where its “PlanetSolar Deepwater” scientific expedition along the Gulf Stream will begin.

While traveling around the world, carried out from 2010 to 2012, the MS Turanor PlanetSolar sailed for 26 days across the Atlantic, setting the world speed record for a solar-powered transatlantic crossing and her first entry into the Guinness Book of Records. Record held until now and never broken, except by itself. Confirming the improvements of the solar boat after the last maintenance and optimization works.

During the transatlantic crossing, the crew encountered substantial cloud phases for several consecutive days, and had to optimize the route. The commander of MS Turanor PlanetSolar, Gérard d'Aboville, explains that "it was necessary to make a significant detour to the south, which increased the travel distance by 7%, but allowed us to avoid unfavorable winds".

"Once again, the boat has provided a brilliant demonstration of the potential of solar energy, breaking its speed record for a transatlantic crossing set in 2010, improving it by 4 days, 6 hours and 38 minutes," he explained. Gerard d'Aboville.

The MS Turanor PlanetSolar, built in Kiel, Germany, is a catamaran powered exclusively bysolar power. On May 4, 2012, after sailing for 584 days and traveling over 60.000 km, you made 2.013 expeditions.
